CV vs Resume: What's the Difference (and Which Do You Need)?
"Send us your CV" and "attach your resume" can mean the same thing — or two different documents — depending on where you are. Getting it right matters, because sending the wrong format signals you didn't read the market.
The short version
- In the US and Canada, a resume is a short (1–2 page) targeted summary, and a CV is a long academic document for research/teaching roles.
- In the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and much of Asia and Africa, CV is the everyday word for what Americans call a resume — usually 1–2 pages.
So a "CV" in London and a "CV" in Boston are different things. Read the audience.
Resume (US/Canada)

Academic CV (US/Canada)
Long and comprehensive: publications, research, grants, teaching, presentations. Length grows with your career. Used for academia, research, and some medical/scientific roles.
"CV" elsewhere = resume
If you're applying in the UK, EU, GCC, or similar, "CV" just means a concise, tailored 1–2 page document. Same rules as a resume: relevance, clean ATS-safe formatting, achievements over duties.
How to choose
- Which country/market? That sets the meaning of the word.
- Academic/research role? Use a full academic CV.
- Everything else? A short, tailored resume/CV — and tailor it to the posting.
Local conventions matter too
